WHAT’S ON THE SHELF

For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, Colossians 1:9,10

Having a daily slot of time devoted to reading God’s Word, is a necessity for every believer. The scripture above urges us to bear fruit and grow in our knowledge of God. In addition to time in God’s Word, there are some really great resources available to aid us in growth. I’ve listed a few of my favorite resources below. They have added to my understanding of God’s will and heart, which equips me to do ministry.

The Mystery of God's Will by Charles R. Swindoll
This is a great book that I'm in the process of reading. The main thing I've taken from the book is the decreed will of God and permissive will of God! This brings tension because it highlights the fact that God is all-powerful and all-knowing meaning He allows eveything that happens to us whether good or bad. He then takes all those things whether good or bad and works them together for our good and His purposes. (Romans 8:28-29) Many have struggled with this concept for years and we have plenty of Biblical examples to go by: Joseph, Judas, and Jesus just to name a few.

King Me: What Every Son Wants and Needs From His Father by Steve Farrar
A friend of mine recommended this book to me and I'm glad he did! The book was written by one of my favorite authors Steve Farrar. What stood out to me was how Farrar described how most Old Testament Kings did a terrible job of raising their sons! He pointed out the fact that they spent more time building their kingdom than they did building their sons. As a result they did not properly pass the baton. The same could happen to us in this modern day if we don't intentionally pour into our sons the standards of God and model it before them! Other notable books written by Steve Farrar that I've read and highly recommend: Anchor Man, Finishing Strong, and Point Man..

Erasing Hell by Francis Chan
This is a book written by Francis Chan and Preston Sprinkle. What I really enjoyed about the book was how it says Believers should share the gospel with a sense of urgency because of the reality of hell. As human beings we have the tendency to glaze over this reality but since we know that hell is real, it should change the way we live our lives and how we see the people we interact with.
